Milwaukee Record -Reviews, River FemFest Performance

The Milwaukee Record highlighted their favorite performances from Riverwest FemFest. This is what they said.

“This is actually my third time to Milwaukee and I really love it here,” Kelli Frances Corrado tells the assembled crowd outside Company Brewing on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Seattle artist proceeds to perform a set of striking, spare music that’s both gothic and cosmic, her strong voice exceedingly expressive even when delivering melodies that are virtually monotonous. As she crafts a loop of a booming mallet on a single drum, a kid under one of the vendor tents yells, “What’s going on?” It is indeed an otherworldly set, and beautiful as such.”- CR

Show Recommendation ISTHMUS Blog Madison, WI

Madison’s ISTHMUS Blog recommends upcoming show at Communications.

“Kelli Frances Corrado draws on a lot of different musical practices and influences. The music is rooted in her vocals, and her upbringing learning prayer rituals from her Romani Czech grandmother. Her music incorporates a lot of different musical styles and instrumentation, but remains sparse and airy. Local support from Glassmen and Metasun.”

Featured in Northwest Music Scene and The Stranger.

“Kelli Frances Corrado is a dark folktronica singer-songwriter, multi instrumentalist and occasional visual artist. Coupling bittersweet, ethereal vocals with grandiose violins and cellos, underscored by a sinister metronome of pulsing drums, her tracks are dark, atmospheric and enchanting. Influenced by a nomadic history as a tap dancer, military-wife, social worker and music teacher.

Her music has been home to recordings, sound installations, grants and artist-in-residency programs. Working with a wish list mix of artists like Brian Deck (Iron and Wine/Califone), Jeffery Mcnulty (Bat Country/Vera Project), Shawn Hatfield (Amon Tobin/Resident Advisor award winner) and other cool folk. Touring extensively, performing at cavernous venues like E’space B Paris, to critically acclaimed theater On The Boards, Seattle. Her songs are featured on a widespread of Stations from the BBC6 London to Hollow Earth Radio, Seattle.”

Tickets to Corrado’s forthcoming performance at Sunset Tavern October 18 in Seattle, WA with special guest Gaby DeSpain and Lilac.

Grrrls With Guitars Gives Book of Echoes, **** Star Review And Front Page Feature!

Book of Echoes - Kelli Frances Corrado (Flat Field Records), Review ****

 by Hannah Golightly

“Kelli Frances tracked me down via twitter (@grrrlswithguitars) to introduce me to her music. And I am so glad she did. Her sounds is so unique that I can’t compare it to anything else. Perhaps though, the vocals are a touch like Goldfrapp, but even so Kelli manages to sound even more ethereal and siren-esque. ‘The Roses Courage’ is the first single and video from Kelli Frances Corrado’s album Book Of Echoes, released on Flat Field earlier this yearThe album itself is a concept record,

“each song is dedicated to an Arc angel and a personal healing lesson” says Corrado.

Corrado is a multi-instrumentalist who has collaborated here with Caitlin Olive on violin and Adrienne Davies on percussion. The beats on ‘The Roses Courage’ are Middle Eastern inspired.

“It is a regenerative spell woven of feminist power incantations.” she says.

The video sets the perfect mood for the song, with it’s roses and haze of smoke. The theme is witchcraft and female empowerment. Kelli Frances Corrado takes centre stage in this ritualistic and symbolic video. There’s a powerful scene where Corrado’s being surrounded by The Skate Witches collective as she casts spells in a trance and they fly by on skateboards, violins playing on and the dominant thunder of the drums journeys us to altered states.”

Book Of Echoes – Kelli Frances Corrado is out now on Flat Field Records.

OCTOBER 3, 2016

article by Miro Justad.

TOM TOM-As a Female Pressure artist yourself, what kinds of connections have you gained from the database that other emerging artists might find enriching and useful? Can you tell us how you joined the database?

Kelli- I had been searching for a like minded artistic group and found out about Female:Pressure through a Fact Magazine article. I contacted them, they interviewed me and discovered we were a good match, so I joined. Female:Pressure has a wide definition for electronic music and for artists like myself, who use a wide range of instruments (Autoharp to Pattern Beat making), sometimes genres can feel pretty segregated. So Female:Pressure is great for any artist dedicated to their craft and  who has an electronic aspect to their music. It’s a powerful resource for sharing technical information about gear, shows and other music business. It’s also a been a pretty amazing way to meet other artists. For example- Last October, I played the first NYC Female:Pressure showcase co-presented by Tom Tom Magazine and Discwoman, curated by Female:Pressure member Leah King. Through this one show I connected with so many incredible people that I will be going back to perform in Brooklyn this September for the third time.

TOM TOM- The teaser for your new album “Book of Echoes” shows strong symbolism like crescent moons, shades of purple/blue, candles, flowers, and female skate boarders. How are these symbols important to this project and to yourself?

Kelli- I want to express strength and courage using feminine symbols. Not just being ‘pretty’ but vulnerable and fierce. The crescent moon is a symbol of mystery, intuition and femininity. For the promo video, jeweler, The Small Beast lent me her ‘Prophecy’ moon necklaces which are rough hammered silver. They represent a raw strength to me and I find the fearlessness of skateboarders inspiring. I am also grateful to my friend and artist Allyce Andrew whose unique eye helps me to bring these visuals to life. Stylist Isabela Garcia also lent her dreamy sensibilities.

TOM TOM-Tell us about what it is like to create a concept album :

Kelli- Creating Book of Echoes has been the most challenging and empowering body of work I have ever created. Technically, it was the first time I wrote all the beats by myself using electronic apps, live percussionists and hours in the studio manipulating sounds with engineer Jeffery Mcnulty. I also wrote each song in the key (according to the lore) of the Arc angel. For example- song, The Roses Courage is connected to the Arc angel Michael and is written in the key of G. Personally, the songs are chapters to a two year time span which tells the story of 7 healing lessons: losing my cat of 12 years, letting go of old friendships, being taken advantage of professionally. Lessons on learning on how to be strong in moments of vulnerability.

TOM TOM-For people who have not had the pleasure of seeing you live, what sort of set up do you have on stage?

Kelli - My set up is a combination of Autoharp, hand percussion, floor tom, effects pedals, iPad, lace fabrics and an old sewing machine table. And a live violinist. I try to create an atmosphere that you can disappear into through your eyes and ears.

TOM TOM- How did you initially hear of Skate Like A Girl and what has been your involvement with female skate boarders?

Kelli -I first heard about Skate Like A Girl through Youngstown Cultural Arts Center director David Bestock. He introduce me to Nancy Chang who use to be the director of Skate Like a Girl and she helped me to find skaters for my music video, The Roses Courage.

TOM TOM- The benefit show will be special not only because you will be coming home from tour, but also because you will be premiering a music video for us all! Can you give us a sneak peak of what to expect from the song/video?

Kelli- The Promo Video for Book of Echoes, use visual samples from the up coming video, The Roses Courage. Take a peak..

Book of Echoes promo video by artist Allyce Andrews is a music and visual sampler. Giving a taste of the stories and videos to come. Featuring skate boarders from organization, Skate Like A Girl and filmed at the legendary, now defunct female owned strip club, The Lusty Lady. The is a story told in 7 songs, about 7 Arc angels and 7 healing lessons.

NEWS, July 7,2015

If David Lynch is considering new contenders to serve as chanteuse for the Twin Peaks reboot, Seattle’s own Kelli Frances Corrado should be high on that list. Her spooky, off-kilter blend of  Northwest ethereal charm and  melodic, other-worldly, quirkiness  were recently captured in Kelli’s new video for ‘Lonely, Samba Style’ directed by STACKEDD Alum Allyce Andrew. You can check KFC out live a tthe Highline on July 8 with the all -lady bill of Spectacular Spectular and Full Moon Radio before she heads into the studio for the rest of the summer.  Kelli recently took the time to play “Top Five” with STACKEDD – clueing us in on her loves, dream collaborators and the makings of her signature sound.

Who are your Top Five most influential artists, musical or otherwise?

KFC: Portishead, Anais Nin, Edith Piaf, Folklore and fairy tales writers, and St.Teresa

If you could dinner with any 5 musicians living or dead who would it be?

KFC:  Left Eye (TLC), JDilla, Ella Fitzgerald, St. Teresa, and Leonard Bernstein

What are your Top Five show moments (as a musician or an audience member)?

KFC:  Musician:

Performing live and being filmed for Lartsenic Blog in Marseille. It was outside of Norte-Dame de la Garde, a 13th century Byzantine Church on top of a mountain facing the ocean. One of my band mates was crying throughout our whole set because of the beauty.

The first time my dad saw me perform. It was at the Vera project a couple of years ago. Very spiritual, right around the time, I started having out of body experiences on stage during singing.

Audience member:

Cocorosie -The first time I saw CocoRosie which was 5 years ago, I left in the middle of their set and stood outside, overwhelmed and completely schooled by their musical and visual presentation.

Koko Taylor- I saw her when I 15 years old at the Chicago Blues fest. She was wearing a silver sequined dress, gold grill, barefoot and sang her heart out.

Statice- going to see one of my songwriting students perform at the Langston Hughes monthly open mic. It was her first time, beautiful and courageous.

What are your Top Five most musically inspiring places in Seattle?

KFC: Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, The Frye, The Hideout (Bar) Hollow Earth Radio, My bed/ dream-life

If you could collaborate with any five women in Seattle who would they be and why?

KFC: Thee Satisfaction + Caitlin Olive (Violin) + Adrienne Davies (drummer for Earth) = my dream Seattle 12″ inch. I thought long and hard about this question because the last time I answered a question like this it came to pass. I think of making music like making a quilt, pulling in different textures and piecing them together for one creation/song. Growing up in Chicago gave me a solid base of hip hop but my spirit is somewhere at a doom Renaissance festival. So I would choose this orchestra. AND if Alicia Amiri ever wanted to manage an artist…

Feature in Feminist Blog, "The Girls Are..."

“Kelli Frances Corrado might look like she should be in Alisha’s Attic (or maybe that’s just wishful thinking from someone as hopelessly infatuated with 90s girl-pop nostalgia as me), but the Seattle songwriter’s sound is entirely her own.

Following former lives as a tap dancer and army wife, as well as a four-year history of vocal and guitar duties with ambient noisesters Arkade, Kelli’s solo efforts feature soundscapes recorded in an assortment of weird and wonderful places, including a sea plane port, church, boat house and warehouse with six-second reverb. And although she’s still relatively unknown in the UK, lately many an influential music biz type have been giving her rave reviews, from the owners of Fat Cat and Light in the Attic Records to the almighty Ruth Barnes from The Other Woman.

Produced by Brian Deck (a chap of many talents who has worked with Modest Mouse and Iron & Wine), Kelli’s latest track The Swan Initiative has that scratchy lo-fi evocative edge that reminds me of comedowns on grey afternoons, soundtracked by bootleg cassettes with their liquorice spaghetti insides stretched and distorted from being played too many times.

Coupling bittersweet, ethereal vocals with grandiose violins and cellos, underscored by a sinister metronome of pulsing drums, the finished tracks are dark, atmospheric and enchanting, reminiscent of The Howling BellsBat for Lashes or Black Box Recorder. Deliciously seductive, Kelli’s songs get into your head and under your skin, like an obsessive teenage crush. Keep a close watch on this one, because I’m sure she’ll be stellar before long.”
